I know that when I have a crack of chip in my auto glass I am supposed to get it fixed right away. Sadly, this is something that I am just unable to do for an assortment of reasons. The biggest reason is just that I do not have the time. I work a fifty hour a week job and by the weekend I have a ton of other errands I need to do if I am even in town. I am curious to know if there is anything I can do to keep the chip just a small chip in the time it takes me to get it fixed finally? This time period could be all the way up to a month depending on my schedule at work. I would appreciate any information you may have that will keep my small chip that small and not turn it into a major crack. I know that if they do get larger than it will just cost me more money and possibly take up more of my time to get fixed. Thanks so much for all of your help and I hope to hear from you soon.

Dear Busy Worker,

We completely understand what you are saying. Many people are in the same situation as you are, where there are just not enough hours in the day to get everything they want done, done. We are happy to hear that you do know that chips and cracks cannot be left too long before being repaired. In order to keep your chip just a chip and not grow into a large crack, here are a few things you can do.

Cover the chip with a small piece of clear plastic tape. This may look a little funny, but it will keep dirt and moisture from getting into the chip which will make it expand.

Do not use your defroster. Living in San Diego, you probably do not use it much anyway. The heated air though will cause your glass to expand which will cause the chip to grow into a crack.

Do not get your car washed. The pressure from the hose alone may cause the chip to grow. On top of that, the temperature difference in the water and the auto glass can cause the chip to grow and eventually crack.

Keep your car parked in the shade. The heat from the sun will cause you glass to once again expand which will make the chip into a crack.

Try not to slam your doors, hood, or trunk. Doing this will cause the car to vibrate which will then go through the auto glass. The vibrations may cause the chip to grow in size.

We really hope that these pointers have helped you out. But please, do not wait too long to get that chip fixed. There is no reason to have that small chip turn into a large crack just because you let it sit for too long.
